Evolve is an evidence-based weight management app for patients with obesity. With Evolve, Patients can successfully meet their health and wellness goals with a personalized team of health providers, education resources, and tools for logging/tracking their meals, exercise and weight.
Challenge
Prior to the qualification process, patients have gone through an emotional realization of accepting their health issues and the need for additional support. It is crucial during the on-boarding of the app to establish a good impression and showcase the value it has to offer in their health endeavors.
How might we design an on-boarding experience that enables users to feel confident and excited at the start of their journey in overcoming obesity with the Evolve app?

Solution
To design an on-boarding experience that focuses on building trust and teaching behavior that would enable users to feel confident and excited to adopt the app into their daily routine.
Qualified patients receive a welcome email that prompts them to begin the registration process. During this part of the onboarding, patients go through a series of screens that focused on building trust.
Once the patient submits their profile information, they are greeted by their first name, a special video message from the apps founder and short bios of their assigned health providers.
Once the initial on-boarding is complete, the patient gains access to their dashboard. Data modules start off with an inactive state due to the lack of data. The goal of this next experience is to teach them how to use the platform.
The first thing to do is to familiarize the user to the UI. Which includes a brief message about the Dashboard, and then blurbs about the Add button and the main navigation bar.
Next we want to introduce the idea of goals, which is one of the core features of the Evolve app. There will be four initial goals that are pre-loaded to help new patients to jump start their experience with the app:
1. Log First Weight
2. Log First Meal
3. Complete First Module
4. Complete First Questionnaire
Once the user has completed all four of their initial goals, their goal slots will be empty. We will encourage them to add new goals by visiting the Goals section.
In the case that users are not able to accomplish all initial goals in one sitting, we have developed a series of "nudges" that prompts them to complete the process. The launch of these "nudges" are set to 24 hrs of inactivity from the last user interaction.
